Program Overview
Hiroshima Animation Season 2026 will present a special feature titled "Animation and 'Modern' Lines," welcoming Naoyuki Asano and Kazuya Kanehisa as guests to explore the nature of drawing lines in animation.
Both artists are highly conscious of the historical nature of drawing lines in animation (and its related culture) while practicing ways to connect this history with contemporary audiences in a compelling manner. In today's media landscape, where everything tends to be consumed purely in the "present," the appeal of the "retro" is being rediscovered even within the mainstream scene. This special feature was organized to delve deep into their practices, offering an opportunity to reflect on the rich history and future possibilities of animation.
Kazuya Kanehisa initially worked as a cartoon researcher. Building on his research, he began producing animations that reinterpreted historical visual languages for the modern era, gaining widespread recognition with his music video for Kocchi no Kento's "Hai Yorokonde." In this talk, we welcome him as our guest to deeply explore his methodology for vividly reviving history in the contemporary world.
Guest
Lecturer: Kazuya Kanehisa
Moderator: Daisuke Tanaka
Born in 2001. Having loved Japanese TV animation and American animated shorts since early childhood, he has since developed a strong interest in classic cartoons from the 1920s to the 1950s, as well as Japanese animation from the 1960s and 1970s. He began producing animations in 2022. His animations, which depict modern society with a flavor of the Showa 30s and 40s (the late 1950s to 1970s), have generated significant buzz. Representative works include the music video for Kocchi no Kento's "Hai Yorokonde" and the NHK Minna no Uta song "Tomodachi no Tomodachi."
