Program Overview
This installation features projection-mapped insects and Japanese mitten crabs collected in Hiroshima. These creatures live their lives encased in rigid exoskeletons and shrouded in camouflaging patterns. Similarly, humans adorn themselves with clothing, makeup, and accessories.
The act of guising is a paradox; it amplifies our outer presence while policing our physical comfort, wrapping us in beautiful restraints. This work projects a living canvas onto the stiff, silent architecture of these organisms, prompting viewers to reconsider the act of guising not just as decoration, but as a site of shared exhilaration, tension, and adaptive ingenuity.
The accompanying soundscape is composed by Osamu Kawakami, whose work stems from a deep fascination with living creatures and a rich, imaginative creative vision.
After participating in an exchange program at California College of the Arts, Shizuka Miyazaki completed her M.F.A. at the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts, majoring in Animation. Her artistic practice explores moving image expressions that cross various techniques, including pixilation (stop-motion with human bodies), 3DCG, and hand-drawn animation.
